René Magritte
(1928, 54 x 92 cm, oil on canvas, Museum of Modern Art, New York.)

RenĂ© Magritte’s “The False Mirror” (1929) is another most recognizable oil on canvas painting, featuring a giant eye that seems to gaze out from the canvas (Lipinski, 2019). The painting challenges our perceptions of reality and the act of seeing, as the eye does not belong to a human face but instead floats in an empty blue sky. The title of the painting refers to the idea that the eye may deceive us, suggesting that what we see may not always be what we think it is.
